Everybody loves a superhero. Fact. Whether it’s the smooth talking Iron Man, or the big green Incredible Hulk – you gotta have a favourite. I decided to squeeze as many features of the Marvel Universe as I could onto one dress – characters, comic strips, this bad boy has it all.
Thor – Check. Silver Surfer – check. Reading material for moments of boredom – check. I fell in love with the fabric when I saw it and had it shipped over from the States especially, as it wasn’t so easy to come by here in the UK. And simply nothing else would do as a substitute once I’d got it into my head that this fabric was THE ONE. You know how it is. (For anyone as desperate for this fabric as I was, it’s called ‘Marvel Retro Breakthrough fabric’)
The pattern I have used is McCalls’s M7157, in version ‘D’, which has the shorter length skirt, and no pockets. I thought it was a suitably retro design to go with my retro fabric.
There was some serious time spent on placing the pattern pieces in exactly the right place on the fabric to get the design I wanted, which meant that I needed a bit more fabric than the pattern called for (so much so, that I had to order another metre of fabric…which slowed things up a bit). However if you’re going to do it, you’ve got to go big or go home – especially with matching the fabric either side of the back zip:
I’m not gonna lie, that took me about four attempts to get right. And even so, the yellow ‘m’ of ‘comics’ doesn’t match perfectly. But I’m ok with that, because it’s pretty darn close, and there’s lots of other stuff to look at on the dress other than that 🙂
Overall I’m really happy with the way this dress has turned out – it was definitely worth the wait for the fabric, and all the time spent on pattern placement paid off. It’s already had loads of comments (most popular being ‘where did you buy it’ and then, ‘oh, will you make me one?’) and I can’t wait for summer to roll round again so that it can get some more outdoors time.
As a parting gift, here’s me in my bestest superhero pose, getting odd looks from the dog walkers in the park.
